The process for responding to copyright infringement notifications was developed in accordance with the requirements specified in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).  When an infringement notification is received the University's DMCA agent uses the information provided in the notification to identify the computer and its owner.  

Once the owner has been identified a email notification is sent out informing the individual of the infringement.  The email will specify the steps necessary for compliance.  To comply an individual must do the following:

  1. Remove the copyrighted material specified in the notification.
  2. Remove any file sharing software installed on the computer in question.
  3. Pledge in the future to refrain from illegally sharing copyrighted material.

The email will also have instructions for accessing the University's Copyright Infringement Resolution web page. It is necessary for an individual to officially register their compliance through this web page. If an individual believes that an infringement notification is in error they will be given an opportunity on the web page to dispute it. In the event of a disputed notification it will be necessary to work with LTS staff to verify whether or not a violation has occurred. Failure to respond to a notification will result in a loss of network access (wireless and wired).

Note: Any future copyright infringement notifications will lead to loss of network access (wireless and wired) and/or referral to the Dean of Students for disciplinary action.
