Title: Professor of Practice and Associate Chair in Computer Science
College/Department: Computer Science & Engineering
Course: CSE 011: Learning Software Development
Student Enrollment: 150
Proposal: The Computer Science & Engineering department recognizes that many capable students struggle due to a lack of effective learning and time management skills. To address this, the department is launching CSE011 Learning Software Development, a new one-credit course designed to teach students metacognition and practical learning strategies, while also introducing fundamental computer science concepts and tools. This change aims to consolidate existing ad-hoc instruction and add new, crucial content, ultimately improving student retention and performance in the demanding CS program. Students are expected to gain a strong foundation for future courses and adopt transformative learning strategies. To achieve this, collaboration with CITL and OEIA staff is being sought on crafting learning objectives, implementing active learning and inclusive design principles, and utilizing appropriate instructional technologies for large classes.
