Microsoft Windows 10 FAQ

Window 10 was released in July 2015 and is offered as a free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8 users through July 29, 2016. The majority of the university-owned faculty and staff computers run the Enterprise version of Windows 7 and are managed by LTS. These PCs/laptops will not be automatically updated to Windows 10. Please see the Q &A below for a more detailed explanation regarding Library and Technology support for Windows 10. More information regarding Windows 10 will be provided in the upcoming months. What are Library and Technology Services (LTS) plans for upgrading university-owned desktops and laptops to Windows 10?

LTS has upgraded public site computers to Windows 10. The STARS support consultants and the Help Desk have been testing Windows 10 and are prepared to support students, faculty and staff.

What are the different versions of Windows 10?

There are four desktop versions of Windows 10 (Home, Professional, Education, Enterprise). Students who automatically upgrade to Windows 10 will most likely use the Home or Professional version.

What are the student options for obtaining and using Windows 10?

There are several upgrade options for students: --If a student owns Windows 7 or 8 he or she should be prompted to perform the free upgrade through the Windows automatic update feature. Note: free upgrade available from Microsoft through July 29, 2016. The Windows 10 upgrade is only available via download, there is no DVD media for this upgrade. --Through Lehigh’s Microsoft Campus Agreement, students who do not qualify for the free upgrade through Microsoft may obtain a free copy of Windows 10 through the Kivuto web store. Windows 10 is available via download only, there is no DVD media for this upgrade. --Through the DreamSpark Premium Program, Students may also obtain a free copy of Windows. What are the faculty/staff options for obtaining and using Windows 10 for Home use?

--Faculty/staff who have personally owned computers running Windows 7 or 8 should be prompted to install a free upgrade to Windows 10. Note: free upgrade available from Microsoft through July 29, 2016. The Windows 10 upgrade is only available via download, there is no DVD media for this upgrade. --Faculty/staff who do not qualify for a free upgrade, may purchase the Education version of Windows 10 through the Kivuto web store for $9.95. Windows 10 is available via download only, there is no DVD media for this upgrade. --Through the DreamSpark Premium Program, Faculty (not staff) may also obtain a free copy of Windows. For information, please see: DreamSpark Premium. Under this program, faculty are allowed 2 perpetual Windows 10 licenses for personally owned computers

What are the options for supporting Windows 10 Tablets and Phones?

LTS will work with faculty, staff and students to resolve any issues that arise with Windows 10 Phones and Tablets -- testing this new OS with Lehigh services and the wide range of devices in use is an ongoing process.
