Special Updates for STE-SD (Scitec) Phone Users

8/20/02

The Scitec test period was extended to from 8/1 to 8/15. The vendor has made good progress on resolving the three major issues: a 2-3 second delay in call delivery when you answer incoming calls; "dropouts" during conversations, where the call disappears for 1-3 seconds and then comes back; and display legibility.

The Scitec phones will definitely be replaced with the same model, or an acceptable alternative, as soon as practical. Until we are able to identify the timetable for replacement, we appreciate your patience. More information will be shared as soon as it becomes available.

Scitec users are still experiencing another, unrelated problem: CallerID does not show up on incoming calls, and the time and date on the display itself are incorrect. In this case, the phone is working fine; the problem lies with the card in our new PointSpan telephone system that controls CallerID on the STE-SD phones. Our vendor Intecom is working on a fix, and we will inform that campus community as soon as we learn this problem has been resolved. (Displays on the multi-line digital phones are controlled by a different source on the system, so these have been fine.)

We appreciate your continued patience as we approach the final resolution of these problems.

24 test phones have been installed around campus and we are currently receiving feedback from these users. The test will run through August 1. The results so far are encouraging; the display and delay problems have been resolved, and the number of cutouts has dropped to zero for most users. More information will be available after August 1.

On the CallerID issue, Intecom is testing a fix. Lehigh will soon be participating in the test so users may see CallerID going up and down over the next few weeks.

A number of users on campus have had problems with the new STE-SD (Scitec) analog phone. The problems include: a 2-3 second delay in call delivery when you answer incoming calls; "dropouts" during conversations, where the call disappears for 1-3 seconds and then comes back; and display legibility.

With support from our phone system vendor Intecom, we have been working daily with Scitec to resolve these issues. They now believe they have identified and fixed all three problems. A small shipment of test phones is expected shortly. Assuming the test phones perform as anticipated, all STE-SD phones on campus will be replaced as soon as possible (with help from Intecom and Scitec, of course).

STE-SD users are currently experiencing another, unrelated problem: CallerID does not show up on incoming calls, and the time and date on the display itself are incorrect. In this case, it's not a phone problem - the culprit is the card in our new PointSpan telephone system that controls CallerID and other display elements for the Scitec phones. Our vendor Intecom is working on a fix, but it's likely to be several weeks before it's resolved. (The displays on the multi-line digital phones are controlled by a different source on the system, so these have been fine.)
