For the past three years LTS has been slowly migrating the campus to use Gmail as our primary email system. Since 2013 all of our students having been using Gmail and, as of November 29, 2017, 89% of faculty and staff have moved to Gmail. The current plan is to accelerate the move to Gmail over the next several months with communications, personal one-to-one LTS help with the faculty and staff migration, and providing Gmail workshops on enhanced applications, uses, and tools.
Why is LTS migrating all accounts to Google Mail?
Security is the most important reason we are migrating to Google Mail. Google Mail provides enhanced spam/virus filtering, compromised account detection, and anti-phishing technologies that are far superior to our legacy email server. These security enhancements will reduce the university’s exposure to data breaches and provide better identity theft protection for individual faculty and staff members.
Will I be able to use Gmail on my mobile device(s)?
Yes, Gmail can be configured for use on most devices that support email. Your computing consultant will perform the configuration as part of the Gmail migration.
Can I use Mozilla Thunderbird, Mac Mail, or other email “client” software with Gmail?
No. Email client software such as Thunderbird, Mac Mail, etc. is not supported for use with Gmail. Google Mail can be accessed from anywhere by going to http://www.lehigh.edu/google/. This is the only recommended and supported way of accessing your Lehigh Gmail.
Does Google read my email or use the content for advertising?
From the Google For Education privacy page: “Like many email providers, we do scanning in Gmail to keep our customers secure and to improve their product experience. In Gmail for G Suite, this includes virus and spam protection, spell check, relevant search results and features like Priority Inbox and auto-detection of calendar events. Scanning to provide product features is done on all incoming emails and is 100% automated. We do NOT scan G Suite emails for advertising purposes.” More information on the privacy aspects of Google for Education G Suite tools is available at https://edu.google.com/trust/.
How many other colleges and universities are using Google Mail exclusively?
More than half of the US News & World Report Top 50 Schools use Google Mail for faculty, staff, and student email including Brown University, University of Notre Dame, Georgetown University, Rutgers University, Virginia Tech University and UC Berkeley, among others.
