Install and Connect to VPN (Windows 7)

These instructions explain how to obtain and install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client for Windows 7, which is used to create secure network connections to the Lehigh campus network from off campus. A VPN connection makes your PC appear to be on campus, even though it actually isn't.

Using your web browser (such as Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Explorer), go to the Lehigh University Install Software page at software.lehigh.edu.

Click the large blue Log In button and enter your normal Lehigh username and password when prompted for credentials.

Scroll down the list of software titles (or use the Search function) to locate "Cisco AnyConnect VPN". Click the title.

On the bottom of the Cicsco AnyConnect VPN page, click on the green Download button.

Select the Windows 7 operating system option then click the “Agree and Download" button.

Please note that the download process is different based on which browser you use. The AnyConnect installer file will download to your “Downloads” folder if using Mozilla Firefox. In Google Chrome, it may appear on the bottom left corner of your browser window (see below). When downloading using Internet Explorer, an option may appear to run the installer.

Double click on the install icon (Google Chrome), or select “run” after downloading the installer (Internet Explorer), or navigate to the downloads folder and double click the installer (Mozilla Firefox) to begin.

Once you have run the installer file, the installation process will begin. The installation wizard will appear. Click on the “Next” button on the first screen.

Accept the terms in the License Agreement and click the “Next” button.

Click on the “Install” button to begin the installation.

One the installation is complete, click on the “Finish” button. The Cisco AnyConnect client is now installed.

To access the Cisco client, click Start > All Programs > Cisco > Cisco Anyconnect Secure Mobility Client. When the dialog box appears, type vpn.lehigh.edu and click “Connect”.

The subsequent window will allow you to log in. First you must select the appropriate group. Click on the down arrow next to the “General Access” option. If you are living outside the U.S., travelling, and/or if you intend to use library databases, select the “Library Resources” option. For all other access to the Lehigh network, use the “General Access” option.

Next, you will type in your normal Lehigh username and password and click “OK.” The client will now connect you to the Lehigh Network.

If the connection is successful, a message may appear above your system tray indicating that you are now connected to Lehigh.

When you are done using the VPN, be sure to disconnect. To disconnect, locate the Cisco icon in your system tray and single left-click it.

On the Cisco connection window that appears, click the "Disconnect" button. You are now disconnected from the VPN.
