Controlling Displays with the Touch Panel in an LTS-equipped Classroom

The starting point for use of display systems in most LTS Facilities (especially High Technology Classrooms) a touch-screen control panel. They do come in different sizes, from a few inches across up to the size of a regular computer display. The following items will help familiarize you with the capabilities of the panels:

If the touch screen is black, it is in sleep mode. Simply touch it once to activate it. A screen indicating the building and room will display.

Touch the screen again, and, after short warm-up period, the main page will appear, and you may select a video source to display. Buttons on the panel correspond to devices available in the room to be displayed. Typical options are listed below. Not every classroom will have every option. Check the equipment list for your specific room.

  • 'PC' selects the local instructor station computer
  • 'PC 2' selects the extended desktop in a dual display room
  • 'Laptop' selects the user-supplied laptop connected to the provided VGA cable
  • 'HDMI' selects the user-supplied laptop connected to the provided HDMI cable
  • 'Doc Cam' selects the document camera (detailed instructions for use of the document camera are available here.
  • 'DVD' selects the DVD player and displays the player controls. 'More Controls' takes you to the DVD menu page which is used for navigation by many DVDs.
  • 'VHS' selects the VHS player (VCR) and displays the play, pause, and other controls
  • 'TV Tuner' selects the TV tuner and channel selection controls
  • 'AUX Video' selects user-supplied devices attached via the auxiliary inputs

Additional controls on the touch pad may include the following:

  • 'Program Sound' controls the volume of the displayed device (note if you have no sound from the computer check the sound settings on the computer)
  • 'Speech Sound' controls the microphone levels in rooms with microphones
  • 'Mute' turns off the program or speech sound. Touching it again restores the sound
  • 'Picture Mute' or 'Picture Off' blanks the projected image. This control does NOT turn the projector off.
  • 'Picture On' restores the image.
  • 'Lighting and Screen Controls' brings up lighting and screen control pages where you can select lighting scenes and make custom adjustments.
  • 'Advanced Routing' allows maximum flexibility in selecting devices in dual projector rooms. Be sure to select a source for audio if you are selecting a device with sound from the advanced routing page.
  • 'Aspect' allows for display of computer images in wide-screen (16x9) or standard (4x3) modes in rooms where wide screen displays are provided.

Using Computers at LTS Public Computing Sites and Classrooms (FAQ)

Computers at LTS facilities are part of a network that not only connects them to the internet, but also allows them to share software, data, and other resources such as printers. This guide explains how to use these computers, where to find assistance, and the policies governing their use.

How do I log on to a Lehigh PC?

Once any LTS public site computer has been started and is ready for use, you will see the instruction to press Ctrl-Alt-Del to Login. Pressing the Ctrl, Alt, and Del keys will invoke a login dialog box.

To log into the computer, enter your user name and password in the appropriate fields; press the Tab key to move between fields. Make sure "Log on to: AD" below the password field is visible. If it says something like "Log on to: PS-xxxxx" then you'll need to enter your username as "ad\username" in the username field. If it says "Log on to: FSxxxxxx" then it's a faculty/staff machine (you may still be able to login using ad\username if you have permission).

When you are finished using a computer at an LTS public site, REMEMBER TO LOG OUT. If you fail to log out, someone could access your email, coursework, or academic records. To log out, click on Start and choose Log Off from the Start Menu. Make sure you are completely logged out before you leave the PC. Often the logout process with require user confirmation or the process could hang. You are not logged out until the PC returns to the main Logon screen.

How do I handle a locked workstation?

If another user has been logged into the workstation and left without logging out, the computer will display the message "Press ctrl + alt + delete to unlock this computer"and below that in small type it says who's logged on. If you are not the user who is logged in you will need to turn the PC off and then on again. Hold the On/Off button down for at least 10 seconds or until you see the light behind the button disappear. Then, turn the PC back on, and log in as usual.

What happens when I start up (or restart) a lab or classroom PC?

On boot up the computer will display some messages as it loads it's operating system into memory.

The system will briefly display a menu with two choices: Press F3 to ghost or wait 5 seconds for normal boot.

If F3 is selected, the reload process will take 30- 40 minutes on a lightly loaded network with a 100Mb connection. Please do not touch the keyboard until the process is completed. It is important to not interrupt this process once it has started.

Ghost Refresh - If you selected Ghost Single Refresh option, the computer will load software to connect to a remote image server and run ghost from this server to restore the hard drive image for this public site computer. As it finishes, it will automatically reboot the computer twice more.

The Ghost refresh resolves many computing issues, including printing problems, software errors, network problems, and more. When the refresh process is complete, all software not on the base image will have been removed from the hard drive (see software section below for an explanation). The computer will continue to start up Windows and then present you with the login screen.

What will I find on the Desktop?

The Windows desktop contains several items. Along the right-hand side are:

At the bottom of your screen is the taskbar which includes the Start button at one end and the system clock at the other.

Other icons, such as the Firefox, IE, Chrome and Word quick launch and the Microsoft Antivirus active protection logo, may appear in the taskbar.

All software can be started from the Start button's 'All Programs' menu.

How do I install software on a classroom or lab computer?

Each classroom or lab computer comes with a base set of programs, which include the following titles: Adobe Reader, iTunes, Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection (antivirus software), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access), Notepad ++, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Thunderbird, along with Quick time, VLC and Paint.NET. (Other utility programs are under Accessories.) LTS refers to this base set of programs as the base image. Performing a complete software reload provides a new copy of this base image to the computer's hard drive.

Click the Software link on the Desktop to install software that is not included in the base image.There may be restrictions on where some titles can be installed.

How can I access email on classroom or lab computer?

There are two primary methods for accessing your Lehigh electronic mail from the public sites.

  • Mozilla Thunderbird- Access it through Start > All Programs > Mozilla Thunderbird
  • Webmail, the web based mail reader- Point your browser to http://webmail.lehigh.edu
  • Lehigh Gmail - Click Google Apps mail icon on left margin of Lehigh homepage (just above LTS Alerts).
  • You can also access email from the Campus Portal (http://portal.lehigh.edu) via the Mail icon in the upper right corner.

How long does it take for the screen saver to kick in?

In order to protect users' confidential data, a password-protected screen saver has been implemented at the public sites and computing classrooms. The timeout for classroom instructors stations is 2 hours, for all other public site machines it is 10 minutes.

The screen saver can be activated at any time by pressing the "Windows + L" keys on the keyboard. The original user can log back into the computer with the Lehigh password. If the original user has left the PC without logging off, the next user will need to shut the PC down and restart it.

How do I log off of a Lehigh PC?

When you are finished using a computer at an LTS public site, REMEMBER TO LOG OUT. If you fail to log out, someone could access your email, coursework, or academic records.

How can I help keep classroom and lab computers more secure?

Invasive software (described by terms such as computer viruses, worms, and Trojan programs) can be spread around the world in a matter of days; anyone connected to the Internet can be at risk from invasive software. All LTS public site computers have Microsoft Forefront protection software installed. You can also minimize risks from invasive software.

Electronic mail. Avoid opening executable (.exe) attachments and attachments of that are unfamiliar or unexpected. Save attachments as files and run virus detection on them before opening them by right clicking on the file and scanning for viruses.

Look out for phishing email, i.e. someone you don’t know or someone pretending to be someone else requesting sensitive and personal information from you. Phishing e-mail usually asks you to e-mail a password, or fill out a form on a non-Lehigh website (check the address bar) with your username and password. Never login any website with your Lehigh username and password if the site isn't part of the "lehigh.edu" domain. Never e-mail your password to anyone, even someone at Lehigh.

Web browsers. Download software with caution, and run virus detection on the files before running/installing them. Practice safe downloading practices by loading software from a trusted site.

Connecting a Laptop to a Classroom Display

If possible, plug the laptop into a power source.

We have learned from service personnel that many laptop manufacturers, in order to increase battery life, have reduced power output so severely that when power is drawn by using the hard drive, sync signal strength to external monitor ports (which is critical for connection to the projector) may be lost. Also, your battery won't go dead in the middle of your presentation.

Find your laptop's video output port, and plug in the available input cable. There are several kinds, and you may also need an adapter cable to connect your particular laptop to the input cable available in the classroom.

Next, use the touch panel or push-button control to set the room's display system to use the 'Laptop' input. Most classrooms are equipped with some sort of video input switching control nearby the instructor's station or podium.

Turn on your laptop's video output port.

Most laptops have keyboard combinations to allow the video output to be toggled between three modes: 1) just to the laptop screen, 2) just to the output port, or 3) to both the screen and the port. We recommend using the 'Both' setting, so that you can see exactly what's on the screen.

Adjust your laptop's display settings so that your laptop's screen is sent to the output port.

Depending on your operating system and software, you'll have a utility or control panel for specifying how the system handles this external display. For Windows 7, go to Start > Control Panel > Display > Change Display Settings.

We recommend choosing to 'Mirror' or 'Duplicate' the displays so that the laptop screen and the projector show the same thing, instead of 'Extending the Desktop' and having to move your presentation window over to the other screen.

Note: Due to the differences between the size and resolution of your laptop screen and that of the projector, the image on your laptop screen will change.

Using a Document Camera in an LTS-Equipped Classroom

Document cameras essentially replace the functionality of an overhead projector, and add a number of additional capabilities. These instructions cover the most basic functions.

Turn on the projection system using the available touchpad or push-button control, and select the document camera from the source options.

Raise the camera head, using the available lifting mechanism, so that the camera head ends up directly above the work surface. Usually, the lamp will come on automatically, illuminating the work surface.

If necessary, power up the camera and turn on the lamp to illuminate the work surface. Different models locate these buttons in various places.

Place the item you wish to display on the work surface. Most units' work surfaces are reflective enough for transparencies. You should see the item displayed on the selected screen.

On most units, camera controls are located on the camera head. Focus usually defaults to automatic. The picture should self-focus and remain in focus as you operate the zoom, but there may be a slight delay. The automatic focus can usually be switched off with the button on the front of the camera head. 'Freeze' holds the current image in memory. Press again to release to a new image.

On some units, the camera head can be rotated to shoot outside of the working surface. Turn the light out of the way, pull the close up lens out from the front of the camera (it will not fall out), and rotate the camera head.

When you are done with the camera please lower the camera by pulling down on the lifting mechanism. This will also turn off the light.

Using an Annotator in an LTS-equipped Classroom

The annotator provides a variety of tools that allow the user to project mark ups for any selected input source. These marks cannot be saved at this time.

To use it, select ‘Annotator On’ from the touch-screen control.

You can start annotating immediately, by writing on the computer monitor surface with the provided stylus or by using the mouse on the top of the table marked ‘Annotator’ (not the PC mouse in the drawer).

Whatever you write on the screen will be shown on the projector.

Touching the green arrow in the top right corner of the computer monitor with stylus or annotator mouse opens the annotators toolbox. Drawing tools include: Pencil Draw, Ink Color Selection, Line Thickness, Highlight, Line, Arrow, Circle, and Square. The ‘Erase’ and ‘Clear’ buttons facilitate the removal of the notations you’ve made. There is also a ‘Whiteboard’ button that opens up a white surface for you to write on with these tools.

A ‘Freeze’ button will freeze a video or document camera image for markup (note the DVD or tape will continue to run when you do this) use the touch-pad control to pause the player).
The ‘Zoom’ button allows you to select an area on the screen to enlarge, with a second touch releasing the zoom and 'Spotlight' selects an area for emphasis.
The 'Input' button allows you to select a different source so you don’t have to return to the touch-pad to do this.
There are also 'Undo' and 'Redo' buttons.

To stop annotation, select 'Clear' from the tool menu to erase all your annotations and then select 'Annotator Off' on the touch-pad.
